Here is a picture of the next open door in my life. It is also a picture of God’s complete control, provision, timing, blessing, and answered prayer in my life. You know from my last post on how this move to Colorado came about, now let me tell you how this door entered our lives yesterday.
Here’s a little context to put yesterday in perspective. Wendy and I arrived mid-day on Tuesday into the Springs (local talk for Colorado Springs . From the minute we landed until we stopped to either eat, drink coffee, or take a potty break, we have been glued to a steering wheel and an annoying Garmin GPS.
We searched neighborhood after neighborhood, house after house, on what seemed to be a human yo-yo trick around the Springs. We saw every type of zero landscaping (that’s western talk for a bunch of rocks in your yard) to dusty prairie lands that looked like a coyote and cowboy were ready to stroll up.
By Thursday, Wendy and I (and when I say ‘Wendy and I’…I mean Wendy) had talked to over a dozen property managers, realtors, and owners. We either missed the house by a day, or it wasn’t anything like the web posting painted it. So, you can imagine going into day 3 with only one more real business day left to find a house, there was a little bit of stress.
Yesterday changed everything. I went digital ninja on the approach and created my own google map (here is the map for my Integrity peeps still hunting houses) so we could attack neighborhood by neighborhood to rule out sections of the Springs. Wendy and I started the day pretty defeated. We prayed, we cried (when I say we, I mean she , we almost choked each other into unconsciousness, and then we prayed again. If you’ve been married more than a year you know what I’m talking about. Those fights are good, as long as you recover…laugh…and learn to love from them.
So here is the testimony to how our God works as a true Father to make sure His children are okay. We were about 10 minutes away from a showing, when I was steady in my digital ninja google map mode and decided to hit one more house before the showing. I picked a road that seemed like the last one in that bunch, which could help us knock off another block of the Springs we couldn’t find a house in
We pulled up to the house and were trying to get the realtor number when a guy walked up to Wendy’s passenger window. We were so focused on the house it made us jump at first. He assured us he wasn’t a whacko, and asked if we were looking for a house. We laughed and said yes, then he called his wife immediately as he told us his house was just 7 down on the right. It was the blue one (which is few and far between in the popular “earth tones” of the Springs houses. He hadn’t even listed the house yet, because he just found out they were relocating to New Mexico.
So, his wife agrees to let us come take a look…and off we went. As soon as we walked in the house it was instant “fall in love!” She showed us around the tri-level house and pointed out all the custom work/upgrades. They had it built 4 years ago, and put every loving touch into it you could ask for…and more. A great patio deck with unabstructed view of Pikes Peak and a sunrise view. Absolutely amazing.
So here is the testimony. I don’t believe in coincidences or happenstances. The timing of us taking a trip to that particular house down the street and the man walking past us at the same time with his kid on the way to the park is not coincidence. The chances of us having a rental car with a Michigan car tag and the house owner being from Michigan is not just happenstance (which is why he stopped). The house being everything we could imagine, ask for, or even dream is not a mistake. The fact that my good friend Cory, who just moved back to the Springs last Friday, is literally 1 mile away is not a coincidence…and when he texted me for dinner plans as we’re finalizing the lease with the owners in the house, just didn’t happen. And did I mention that it’s a 7 minute commute to work!?!
If we would have put that house visit off until later in the day, then our encounter would have never happened. I know you can easily over-spiritualize things, but I can truly say this open door is from God. Like a good Father, He knows what we need…when we need it….and how to get it to us. I could go on for another 5 paragraphs on the tangible signs that affirmed this house was right for our move into this next chapter of life.
I love when God’s hand is undeniably all over specific prayer and details. We were burdened, under a heavy load of stress, making major life decisions and crying out to God to bring the right door. He did! I stand on this truth that David declared in Psalm 145…and thank God for being truly Jehovah-Jireh.
14 The Lord helps the fallen
and lifts those bent beneath their loads.
15 The eyes of all look to you in hope;
you give them their food as they need it.
16 When you open your hand,
you satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing.
17 The Lord is righteous in everything he does;
he is filled with kindness.
18 The Lord is close to all who call on him,
yes, to all who call on him in truth.
19 He grants the desires of those who fear him;
he hears their cries for help and rescues them.
